THERAPEUTIC RIDING
an adapted recreational activity
About our Therapeutic Riding program
Therapeutic riding is an equine assisted activity that aims to develop equine related skills, from a recreational or sport perspective for individuals who learn differently due to cognitive, communication, or motor differences.
This program includes a number of beneficial activities that include handling the horse, grooming, riding, driving and vaulting. These activities provide participants with opportunities to increase self-awareness, work on behaviours, improve self-confidence, gain independence, work as a team, and develop a sense of achievement among many other intrapersonal and interpersonal abilities.
At Enfants en Équi-Libre, our riding instructors are certified by the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA). They have specialized training in the adaptation of this activity so it is safe, fun, and challenging for each rider. A variety of clients, with or without a diagnosis, who are minimally autonomous can participate in our therapeutic riding program.
As part of our interdisciplinary approach to all our programs, our occupational therapists can work with our therapeutic riding instructors to set objectives for each rider individually in order to optimize growth and success while riding.
